The vast majority of subspecialty training occurs in the ambulatory arena.

The second and third year resident schedules are divided into alternating eight-week periods of ambulatory and inpatient experiences. During ambulatory blocks, residents rotate through six core subspecialties including cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology-oncology, pulmonary medicine, and rheumatology. Residents complete four week outpatient rotations in each of these six areas. In addition to this, primary care residents also complete selectives in ambulatory-based specialties such as dermatology, sports medicine, women’s health, and allergy and immunology. Required infectious diseases and nephrology rotations remain inpatient-based consultative experiences.

The second and third year resident schedules are divided into alternating eight-week periods of ambulatory and inpatient experiences. The six core subspecialties include cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology-oncology, pulmonary medicine, and rheumatology. Residents complete four week outpatient rotations in each of these six areas. Residents are also required to choose two of the six core subspecialties in which to complete a two-week inpatient consultation experience. In addition to the six required core specialties, all residents complete a two week rotation in neurology.

During each four week subspecialty ambulatory experience, a primary care resident typically has six different half-day clinics in that subspecialty each week. This provides housestaff the opportunity to work closely with many outstanding subspecialty faculty, as well as gain exposure to most of the common diseases treated in those subspecialties.  Below is a typical weekly schedule for residents on an ambulatory block.

Junior and senior residents also have significant elective time in their outpatient schedules to design a curriculum based on their career goals. UCLA offers a broad range of ambulatory electives including:
